“He says he’s in there painting still lifes, what’s a girl to say?” - Mrs . Matisse
Mrs. Matisse was made after I visited the Matisse show at MOMA in 1994. After viewing many portraits in the show of Matisse’s wife Emile, on the quay in a kimono etc, there was this little sign that read” Matisse moved to the south of France by himself” and I wondered : what happened to his wife?
I just assumed Matisse started chasing his models, as at that time there was no information on what happed to his wife. Shortly after the film was screened in NYC I received a note from Matisse’s granddaughter that I had indeed “hit the nail on the head”.
